When a roof sheds its snow all at once

The thing that makes metal good in this climate is also the thing nobody warns you about. It sheds snow. Not gradually, and not always when you are indoors.

Six places a roof gives way in this valley. On most of them the covering is not what failed. Where this sits on the roof.

  1. 1 The ridge cap. On metal it is a separate piece with closures under it. Blown snow finds the joint that was never closed.
  2. 2 The seams. A standing-seam roof lives at its seams and clips, not at its surface. The panel outlasts what holds it.
  3. 3 The valley. One channel taking what two slopes shed — and on the north side, holding snow long after the field is clear.
  4. 4 Where the ell meets the wall. A lower wing dying into the main house. Two roofs, one wall, and nobody sure whose seam it is.
  5. 5 The fasteners. Exposed screws through the panel, each with a rubber washer. The washers age; the screws work loose.
  6. 6 The eave. Drip edge, gutter, and the question every metal roof asks: where does a slab of snow go when it lets go?

What a release actually is

Snow sits on a metal roof as a single mass. Sun or a warm attic melts the thin layer touching the panel, and at that moment the whole slab has almost nothing holding it. It goes at once, and everything it lands on takes the load in one blow: the gutter, the porch roof below, a hedge, a car, the walk to the door.

This is not a defect. It is how the covering works, and on a barn roof over open ground it is entirely fine. It becomes a problem when the roof was put on a house without asking what is underneath the eave.

Snow guards, and where they belong

Snow guards hold the slab in place so it melts where it lies instead of leaving in one piece. They are not decoration and they are not needed everywhere — only above the places where a release would do harm: doorways, walks, driveways, lower roofs and anything you park under.

How they attach matters more than how they look. On standing seam they clamp to the seam without penetrating the panel. On exposed-fastener panel they are screwed through, which means new holes, which means they belong in the plan rather than added later by whoever is available.

The question to ask before signing

If a quote for metal does not mention what happens to the snow, that part has not been thought about. Walk the eaves and name what sits under each one. A crew that answers with specifics — guards here, nothing needed there, and why — has done this in this valley before.
